About this blog
I created this site to house the articles and caresheets I have written over the past twenty years. If you would like to write a guest article or suggest edits to articles or caresheets please contact me. Hermit Crab Care is not an exact science and ‘adequate care’ changes as the years pass.
In 1998 I founded the Land Hermit Crab Owners Society at http://www.lhcos.org and now on Facebook which produces an online and printed magazine, The Crab Street Journal http://www.crabstreetjournal.org
I’m a 44 year old former teacher and now website developer from Brisbane, QLD Australia. I started caring for land hermit crab in 1994 when living in a one bedroom apartment. I followed the land hermit crab care book and used the products sold in my local pet stores and my hermit crabs died. I then did some research and talked to researchers and other crabbers and learned the importance of correct substrate for moulting (wood shavings are bad, sand is good), that hermit crabs are tropical creatures and as such require tropical environment with temperature above 27oC / 80oF and humidity above 80%, and dietary needs. I created a website about my pet hermit crabs and received many emails asking questions about their care. I wrote long answers and many questions over and over until I decided to put them on my website and my caresheets were thus created. You can find me on The Land Hermit Crab Owners Society on Facebook and on Google+ Hermit Crabs group.
